Boinc distributed computing network

BOINC is a program that leverages the computing power of ordinary computers to help different organizations such as Rosetta@home which uses your computers idle processing power to help find cures to diseases. I previously did a post about BOINC but recently the network has become extremely powerful. Combined BOINC has over 2.4 million users and 6.2 petaflops of computing power! For a comparison the worlds most powerful supercomputer is 10.5 petaflops. Of course the 6.2 petaflops is divided amongst many different organizations like I mentioned earlier such as Rosetta, SETI, Einstein, and many others. I currently participate in Rosetta, Seti and Einstein. Seti sends out data collected from the Arecibo satelite - the largest satellite in the world- in search of extraterrestrial life, and Einstein searches for Pulsars or black holes. So far seti hasn't found much of anything but Einstein and Rosetta frequently make discoveries, last year someones home computer running Einstein found a black hole!

Fisker Atlantic - Plug in electric car

The new Fisker Atlantic is a high performance mid size electric plug-in coupe featuring an electric engine around 300HP. The expected pricing of this new car is expected to be roughly 50-60k. With all the financial difficulty Fisker is currently having hopefully this lower priced coupe (compared to Karma) will do well.

Game overview: Supreme commander 2

Supreme commander 2 is a popular RTS style PC game. The theme of SC2 is mainly futuristic warfare where your main goal is to build up an economy while you balance your energy and mass and  built up your offence. Compared to the original supreme commander SC2 has a much easier learning curve and the battles tend to not be as large but nonetheless they can still get to be pretty large with 8 players and 1000 units per player in the largest game type. Overall I would give sc2 a 8/10 for great gameplay, but the graphics and the economy system are a bit lacking.

Windows 8 upgrade to cost $15

Windows 8 is right around the corner and with it's highly tablet optimized design I'm not sure it's even worth upgrading. While most windows upgrades in the past have cost around $100 usd windows 8 upgrade is only supposed to be $15. But unlike other windows releases I would hesitate to call this an upgrade. You get a strange new tablet like interface called metro and you loose a few basic features like playing a dvd.. I do like the general UI upgrades but unless I'm on a tablet I don't want to be using a clunky tablet start menu.

Samsung to release first OLED Tv's later this year

The long awaited OLED Televisions are finally starting to show up in the consumer market. Samsung has been a pioneer in this new technology as many of their smartphones feature OLED displays. The advantages of OLED displays over LCD and plasma is first of all much lower power consumption because unlike plasma and LCD in dark scenes the pixels can literally shut off producing a pure crisp black. The visual quality of these new displays is also extremely good, sadly this new technology doesn't come cheap but once the prices come down I can't wait to snag one!

First Ivy bridge laptops to appear in a few weeks

The first set of laptops sporting Intel's new Ivy-Bridge Cpus are right around the corner, some are already up for preorder including Asus's G55VW-DS71. While Ivy bridge features a very similar architecture to sandybridge the 22nm die shrink reduced the power consumption and the thermal output of the cpu's allowing for high clock speeds in the desktop and laptop cpus.  Samsung also recently unveiled their new 17" series 7 chronos laptop. Anyone in the market for a new laptop or even a desktop should look for products featuring the third generation core I series cpu's.

Ipad mini rumors suggest a $200 price tag but with drawbacks

A few rumors recently surfaced involving the upcoming Ipad Mini. The new mini Ipad is supposed to be priced at around $200 but with only 8gb of memory, which is fine for most people who stream instead download movies on their devices. Apple is also likely to include a high PPI display or what apple calls their "Retina display".

Battlefield 3 flying LAV glitch

Battlefield 3 is a relatively smooth playing game which is expected considering the game cost hundreds of thousands to produce. However today I was driving the anti -air LAV and after going over a few hills trying to get to a vantage point the thing started picking up speed like crazy and as soon as I hit the water the LAV went airborne and flew across the map. Pretty funny glitch especially when the other players start talking in chat.

Noctua NF-F12 ultra silent computer fan

Noctua is known for making intuitive and original products and their new NF-F12 is no exception. This may look like an ordinary fan with a different color scheme but there are many small design elements that make this fan one of the most efficient 120mm fans on the market. This fan also features Noctua's second generation SSO bearings and a custom rpm monitor. I'll have a video review of this fan in a few weeks.

Some possible specs for the Iphone 5 released today from several sources indicating the phone will have a larger 4" screen and be 2mm thinner than the previous generation Iphone. The screen will either be made of "Liquid metal" or Corning Gorilla glass 2. Ironically these details released the same day as the Galaxy S3.

Sanyo eneloop AA battery update

About 4 months  ago I decided to try out the famous sanyo eneloop batteries to see if they lived up to their hype and I'm glad to say they do. I've been using these batteries on a regular basis in remotes and cameras and the capacity and reliability of these AA's are great! They are advertised to hold their charge for 1500 cycles I've probably gone through atleast 20 cycles and they are still going strong. Anyway the reason I decided to bring these up again is mainly because I'm working on a review for the charger I use to charge these should have it up tomorrow.

Moors law

Moors law is the observation originally made by Intel's co-founder that the number of transistors in a cpu will double every 18months. Since 1970 this has been followed by cpu manufactures but many experts think silicon has its limit and in another 10 years intel and other manufactures will have to move to other materials to keep producing faster processors.

New Intel Ivy bridge CPUs now available

Intel's line of high end 22nm desktop cpus are now available for purchase from many online retailers with quad core cpus starting at just $179. Being 22nm and having a higher maximum multiplier than the 2nd gen core i7 these cpu's should be able to hit some extreme overclocks.

CPU coolers for overclocking

First off, the guy ahead of me in the Battlefield 3 competition got banned for disrespecting the server admin so now I'm in second place! Anyway...Even though cpu's are becoming more and more efficient overclocking still causes the cpu to generate way more heat; This require large copper/ aluminum heatsinks to dissipate the heat. The cpu cooler I use is a mid size tower style copper/aluminum heatsink. I usually run my core i7 920 at 3.8ghz and being a 130w cpu this puts out tons of heat usually running at 75C in a stress test and around 60C in games. So if your into overclocking... which only a few of my followers are lol be sure not to cheap out on a cpu cooler.

Best thermal paste for computer CPUs / Gpus

Thermal paste is a simple but critical part of almost all high performance electronics like computers and gaming consoles. It acts as a thermal interface filling the micro gaps between the heatsink and the processor which greatly improves contact. Arctic Silver held the top spot for quite a few years as the best thermal paste but now the 2 most popular and highest performing are Arctic cooling MX-4 and Shin-Etsu thermal compound.

How much RAM do you need?

Many desktop PC's still come with 4gb of ram, is that enough? Well for a normal everyday user yes that is enough but anyone who does any work with demanding applications like games, video or photo editing or anything else you need at least 6Gb. Above is a picture of my computers Ram usage with Battlefield 3 open chewing down loads of ram. If you don't know what ram is just imagine its a library
that temporarily stores data untill it is needed if you have a bigger library you can hold more data and accommodate more people so to speak. Anyway Ram is very cheap nowadays so if you have any less than 4gb check out newegg, tiger direct or any other great tech site for an easy cheap upgrade.

Intel Ivy Bridge (22nm) CPU's expected early May

Intel's first 22nm cpu is expected to hit the market sometime early May this year. This new cpu boasts Intel's new 3D transistor technology which helped intel pack 1.4 billion transistors into ivy bridge! As a reference the first generation core I7 had 750M transistors second had 1 billion and now 1.4. Also being a 22nm cpu means less power so notebooks featuring third generation core i7 cpu's will likely be some of the fastest notebooks ever available.
