Best web browsers of 2012

We all have our browser preferences but google chrome offers the highest performance. Firefox undoubtedly has the most features and addons and with firefox 10 coming out soon, very good performance. Overall I prefer chrome for when I just need to get on quickly and firefox for long term browsing.

Great mouse for blogging/gaming!

So this a new mouse I recently got called the Cyborg Rat 7. It's pretty neat and its chassis is made of metal which is great for those hardcore blogging moments when there's more than 40 browser tabs open. This mouse is also adjustable in almost any way you can think of there's several different side pieces and palm rest pieces. The angle of the thumb rest is also adjustable. The metal scroll wheel on the side can be programmed to either switch between tabs or side scroll on zoomed in web pages.

NEW AMD 12.1 Driver

If you don't have an AMD or ATI card I wont be offended if you just comment "cool" lol. Anyway today AMD released new drivers for graphics cards in the 3000, 4000, 5000, and 6000 series video cards (7000 will be coming soon). This driver as with any driver update fixes performance issues in many games and increases the overall performance. You can get these new drivers here.

Android antivirus?

There are a number of apps coming out for android designed to protect your phone from viruses and spyware applications which is great but if you only download your apps from the android market these anti virus apps may just be sucking up extra ram. However the antivirus app lookout actually has a phone locator built in if you ever loose your phone. So overall unless you would like the location feature that some of the antivirus apps have or if you are frequently downloading apps outside of the android market then you probably don't need one.

Update on Sanyo eneloop rechargeable batteries!

So I have been using these batteries periodically for about a month now and I have to say they really are great batteries. They have all been through several cycles and they have a very long battery life in cameras or any other application. If you need some new rechargeable AA's eneloops are some of the best you can get!

Intel powered smart phones and tablets!

Intel has some 32nm mobile chips coming to the smartphone market soon. This new chips are extremely fast and consume little power. These chips are designed to compete with high end TI, Nvidia, and Qualcomm. This should spawn some awesome applications that can harness the power of this new chip and hopefully someone will finally create a somewhat decent video editing app for android!

Programs to improve your computers security.

Even if you have antivirus software your computer may still be at risk. Free antivirus programs typically don't have very strong malware fighting engines so there are a few applications that can help with this issue. Even if you have a full paid antivirus program extra protection can never hurt! Malwarebytes and Adaware are 2 very good free anti malware programs.

BEST Antivirus software for you home PC!

Every year viruses are getting more complex and that's why its completely necessary to have an antivirus program always running. For me I tend to use AVAST free antivirus but the 2 best paid antivirus suits are Kaspersky and Mcafee. If you do have a free antivirus like Avast or AVG I would also recommend downloading a dedicated anti malware program like malewarbytes since the free programs typically don't have strange anti malware included.

QUAD CORE Ipad 3 scheduled for march release!

Apple is planning to release a quad core Ipad around march this year. The CPU will enhance multitasking and in general all applications that require loads of processing power such as Imovie. The new Ipad is also expected to include a higher resolution display and a better camera. As usual the price tag is going to be most likely $499 for the wifi and $599 for the 4g. There is also rumors of a lower priced 7" tablet which I think would be a great seller. Read more here.

Gorilla Glass 2! Even stronger glass for smartphones.

Many smartphones these days use gorilla glass to help prevent cracks and scratches during everyday specifically Motorola. Gorilla glass 2 is the same as the original but it is 20% thinner but still has the same strong stats as the original. Since the glass is thinner it has better optical transmission and touch sensitivity. This new glass should start to show up in new smartphones in the next few months.

My thoughts on the AMD HD 6870

I have been running an XFX HD 6870 for a little over a year now and its been through allot. From bitcoin mining to distributed computing and gaming. This card runs pretty cold idling at around 30C and under load from 60-70C. The fans on the xfx card are pretty quiet and currently I have it overclocked to 1000mhz from 900 stock. This will run battlefield 3 on High/ultra with no aa (need 2gb for that)

Ramdisks ~ What is it and what are they good for?

Ramdisks? What are they and how could I use them? Ramdisks are basically software storage drives on your computer that you can use as super fast storage. For example if you have 8gb of ram you could dedicate 1gb for a ramdisk and put google chrome, firefox or any other program that you freqently use. Even if you have a SSD drive (Solid State  Drive) ramdisks can help as ramdisks can read up to around 3gb/s with ddr3 and a quality chipset, where as ssd’s are limited to around 250-1500mbps. So if you have loads of extra ram or if you would like to make a ram disk its a graet way of speeding up frequently used programs.

Budget friendly AMD 7870 graphics cards to be released in February / March

The 7870 will be the mid end budget graphics card for the 7000 series lineup. Typically the X870 cards play almost all games at maximum or near maximum settings at 1080p. The projected price of this card is supposed to be around $220. The projected specs are 2gb of GDDR5, 1536 stream processors, and a 950MHz core clock. This will be a great card for workstation users and gamers alike.

AMD 7970 EXTREME overclocking potential.

The new AMD 7970 was able to overclock to a massive 1.26GHZ from the base 925mhz base clock. The memory was also able to achieve 6.9Ghz (Effective). This cards huge overclocking potential allows it to score on average 15% better in games and 35% faster than Nvidia’s top single gpu card the GTX 580. This will also help out video editors and people who use AMD cards in workstation computers as the extra computing power gained by overclocking would also help in all sorts of software applications.

The future of credit cards!

Dynamics Inc. is working to bring credit cards into the 21'st century by implementing a re-programmable magnetic strip. This could be used to access the normal credit cards function and another function such as a companies reward program. This re writable magnetic strip can also help out as far as security you could load false data on it so your information could not be stolen.

More distributed computing :) - Folding@home Donate your computers power to science!

Folding@home is similar to boinc in that it uses your computer processing power including graphics and cpu power to help scientists do something called protein folding. This is a process that helps scientists lean more about diseases such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many cancers. This program is also built into the Life with playstation on all Sony playstation 3's so if you wanted to get started you need no tech knowledge! Otherwise there is a PC, Mac, and linux application for running the program on your computer. Folding@home is also very similar to the Rosetta@home application on the Boinc client.

BOINC- Donating your computers processing power to science.

First off sorry for no post yesterday I was extremely busy. Anyway Boinc is a program that leverages the power of your computer to contribute to various projects including SETI@home rosetta@home and Einstein@home. Seti is probably one of the more geeky projects but it is really neat. SETI stands for the search for extraterrestrial intelligence and the data is collected from the Arecibo Observatory in purto rico, the largest observatory in the world. There is also various other observatories. If you participate in this project your computer will help process radio waves in the search for life! Einstein is similar and also uses the Arecibo observatory but Einstein searches for pulsars or black holes.

If your interested in joining my computing team email me at : baur227@gmail.com

Here's what the Arecibo observatory looks like.

Windows 7 Finally catching up to XP

Windows XP has held first place for a very long time but just as windows 7 is about to take the lead Windows 8 will come out. I'm assuming the "other" column is Linux and other operating systems. Windows XP offers solid reliable performance unlike windows vista, however windows 7 is easier on system resources which is why its much more popular.

La crosse Bc-500 Battery Charger Review

So today I got my new La Crosse Bc-500 battery charger, so far it's been working great. I mainly bought this charger to charge the new Sanyo Eneloop batteries that are supposed to maintain its rated 1900mah capacity for 1500 charges. The charger that comes with the eneloops is sufficient but for long term use a quality charger is important to individually charge each battery as the stock charger charges 2 AA's at once in series.

  • 500mah charge rate per battery
  • Display for each battery showing the current capacity of the battery, voltage, and overall amperes.
  • Trickle charge after completion of charge cycle.
  • Detection of defective batteries.
  • Also the plastic is pretty high quality.

Apple Siri on Iphone tells 12 year old kid to "Shut the F**k up"

A 12 year old kid in England was testing out the siri voice command feature on the new Iphone 4s in a grocery store and after asking a few questions one of the Iphone's replies was "Shut the F**k up, you ugly tw*t". The store suspected pranksters modified the software causing the incident. The iphone was then sent back to Apple for diagnostics.

Best Smart phones of 2011

Will cell phone data plans getting cheaper and Verizon moving its data from 2gb to 4gb (Used to be unlimited) Smart phones are becoming almost a necessity. My two top phones would have to be the Iphone 4s and the Samsung Galaxy nexus. The galaxy nexus features 1gb of ram which is great because  most other phones use 512 which just isn't enough for heavy use. The iphone has 512mb of ram but that's acceptable because Ios is more efficient with memory usage. The Galaxy Nexus also has a batter screen but still ease of use makes the Iphone the most popular phone. Even for gaming the Iphone has to win this one because of androids limited market. For people who take tons of pictures the galaxy nexus may be a better choice because it has not only the built in memory but you can add a 32gb micro sd card almost like a flash drive. But Hopefully in 2012 more apps come out to bring out androids potential!
